The truth is out there. This line reflects everything the X-Files stands for. I have watched this show since its first season and am proud to call my self-a fan. My friends come to me for answers about the mythology and they respectively call me an expert. I have seen this show transform from a cult hit to one of the biggest shows on television. I have seen informers die and traitors form, I have seen the development of my personal hero "The Cigarette-Smoking Man" from a shadowy figure to one of the most devious bad-guys since Darth Vader.
The aspect that made me continue watching the show is the same that kept my enjoyment of the movie, an equal involvement of the bad-guys (Fox always has done this. In "Star Wars" the empire got almost equal screen-time as the Rebels) this movie would have been boring if it concentrated only on Muder or Scully. This movie did not however reveal anything important to the mythology except the death of an important figure and the metamorphosis of the "oilen" (or, as I like to call it "the black cancer"). The so-called aliens in this movie are of course the "oilen". But since this is a movie (bigger budget) they decided to add a twist, these aliens gestate the human host (much like the aliens in the "Alien" series) and create a deadlier more viscous animal that bleeds the black oil substance. The Syndicate (of which "The Cigarette-Smoking Man" is a member") meets in London (what happened to the 49th street address) to discuss the problem, all of our suspensions are confirmed, the syndicate has agreed to provide hosts for the aliens. But they had thought that the hosts would become slaves not human incubators. The Syndicate swears to find a cure to kill the aliens or at least stop their colonizing plans. The Syndicates leader is not "The Well-Manicured Man" as I had suspected but may be a man named Conrad Strughold. The Syndicate has built two giant bubbles to house bees near the Texas boarder. They use tangentially altered crops to infect the bees with the "oilen", when the bees pollinate they pick up the virus.
The music was excellent. Mark Snow replaced his synthesizer with a full orchestra and the results were fantastic. It just shows that the X-Files can be easily transferred from a TV show to a movie.
The movie was excellent! As an X-Files fan I am impartial but I think even people who watch the X-Files from time to time would be able to grasp the plot. It helps to understand the mythology but you can get by with some minor knowledge. I have seen this movie twice and I will probably see it again. It makes me mad to think that Fox is not releasing DVDs but I guess Ill have to live with the video version (they better release a wide-screen edition or Ill get really mad). I highly recommend this movie; I just cant state it enough. And remember the truth is out there. Well it looks like Ill have to wait until the next season to get more of the X-Files.
